Just 10 Angry Men (Or Women), Not 12
Louisiana made it back onto the pages of The New York Times today in an article by Adam Liptak, because we are one of only two states (Oregon is the other) that allows convictions based on a 10-2 jury vote, rather than a unanimous decision. Liptak hears from both sides of the debate, noting proponents argue the practice allows for a more efficient trial system with fewer hung juries, while opponents say it merely makes it easier to get convictions and override minority opinions. An Oregon man convicted on a 10-2 vote, and sentenced to 17 years in prison has now taken his case to the Supreme Court to take another look at the issue. Lots more here.
