What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

Jay Vise, reporting for WWL radio in New Orleans, has this story noting a sharp rise in Louisiana residents applying for concealed-carry permits. Vise interviewed State Police Trooper Joey Piglia. From the story:
"We've seen a pretty big increase in the issuing of gun permits, and people applying for them," said Trooper Joey Piglia.

He says that, in fact, the state has issued more CCPs between January and May of this year than in all of 2008.

"We've already surpassed that number by 2,000," Piglia said. "And that's only for five months out of 2009."

Piglia said that officials approved 4,130 permits for all of 2008. For January through May 2009, the state issued 6,131 permits, of which 4,185 were new permits, and 1,946 were renewals.
