To keep the history of the isolated Chandeleur Island chain alive, Louisiana Sea Grant has compiled a collection of photographs, interviews and
information to serve as a gateway for anyone wanting to learn more about the
unique coastal ecology, geology and past of our vanishing barrier island
systems.
Coastal erosion continues to claim more of this amazing landscape, most
recently with the passage of Hurricanes Gustav and Ike in 2008. Researchers
are now concerned that the islands may disappear entirely and much sooner
than originally predicted.
Next, we have this story on Houmatoday.com by Daniel Mcbride about the re-opening of Elmer's Island just south of Grand Isle. From the article:
Elmer’s Island, less than a half-mile southwest of Grand Isle, was closed after the death of its former owner, Jay Elmer, in 2001. Four years later, Hurricane Katrina ruined the island’s access road. The road is now repaired and the island’s beaches, a once-popular destination spot, will reopen in time for Independence Day.On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, visitors will be allowed starting a half hour before sunrise. The road will close a half hour after sunset. The schedule will be maintained until further notice, said Assistant Wildlife and Fisheries Secretary Randy Pausina said.Though the road is repaired, officials advised beach goers travel with care.“I wouldn’t take your sedan down there,” Pausina said. “But if you’ve got a truck or a four-wheel drive you shouldn’t have a problem.”

Now, if more readers were as considerate a Paul, and sent in articles like this, I wouldn't have to work as hard. Thank you Mr. Conover.
