When hurricane season opened on June 1,
NPR's Morning Edition did a pretty interesting story about rebuilding on islands in the Gulf after storms. They talked about the rebuilding of Dauphin Island after Katrina, but also mentioned Isle Dernier, which was a popular vacation destination that was destroyed by a hurricane in 1856 and never rebuilt. Well, come to find out,
USA Today.com picked up a feature story by Susan Larson of the Times-Picayune about 2 new books about Isle Dernier, one of which is publised by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Press called
Last Days of Last Island: The Hurricane of 1856, Louisiana's First Great Storm by Bill Dixon.
