Johnston Street Project Passes Committee

In the world of 24/7 news, this is not a new story. Way back in March, The Independent wrote a great piece about the idea put forth by Reed Andrus as a compromise to the Johnston Street beautification efforts. His website is filled with a ton of fun 'what if's' and interactive maps, so that's definitely worth checking out, but what is new is that it is now one step closer to becoming a reality....albeit still many steps away. Richard Burgess of the Advocate did a story about the project in today's paper. Yesterday the transportation committee passed the redevelopment measure, which will allow the project to move forward. It still has a long way to go, and there are points to be made on both sides (the biggest being whether or not to include boulevard style medians, which business owners believe would make it more difficult to do business on the street), but the hope is that it'll be before the City-Parish Council by the end of summer.
