Louisiana has more imprisoned state offenders per capita than any other state in the nation, and about 1 out of every 26 adults are either in jail or under some sort of supervision. Despite that though, the Department of Corrections is planning to eliminate an additional 300 prison guard jobs. That comes after they already cut 416 jobs earlier this year but because of budget shortfalls, the DOC is considering replacing the jobs with new technology - video court so inmates won't have to be transported, and surveillance cameras instead of people manning the towers. We also have the 2nd lowest dollar amount spent per inmate so there's no room to cut there either. Mike Hasten with The Shreveport Times has a full report.
