Alisa Stingly of The Shreveport Times is doing a three-part series looking at the effect of Haynesville Shale drilling activity on the area environment. Today's story looked at many recent incidents that are leaving residents wondering if their health and drinking water are at risk because of the drilling activity. Most notably, 17 cows died after ingesting spilled liquid, 15 families were evacuated when a natural gas well began blowing natural gas into the air and 1000 families were without water while officials replaced a pump, which officials wondered publicly if it was damaged due to drilling. Read part 1 here. Tomorrow: How drilling impacts water quality, and Tuesday: Shale activity and air quality standards.
