The USA Today has an AP story today about efforts of the state to secure $300 million of funding from the federal government for a passenger rail system to run from Baton Rouge to New Orleans. State officials are hopeful about the project but are aware it comes with many hurdles. The project has been twice voted down since Katrina because of the price tag but officials believe that ridership levels would be high enough to pay for the investment. Now if they could just extend that rail to run through Lafayette on it's way to Houston, it'd be awesome.
