Lafayette City-Parish President Joey Durel announced that Lafayette has been named one of only 5 finalists in the International LivCom “Whole City” Awards competition.
The LivCom Awards are the world’s only competition for local communities that focuses on environmental management and the creation of livable communities. The objective of the award is to encourage best practice, innovation and leadership in providing a vibrant, environmentally sustainable community that improves the quality of life.
They cover five population categories and are judged as to how they are performing within the cultural, political, economic, geographic and climatic environment in which they are situated. The criteria are:
• Enhancement of the Landscape
• Heritage Management
• Environmentally Sensitive Practices
• Community Sustainability
• Healthy Lifestyles
• Planning for the Future
“This is another example of Lafayette being recognized on a global stage, and we are pleased that LivCom has named us a finalist,” Durel said. “Lafayette is a complete community, making it a great place to live, work and raise a family, and it’s great to see others recognizing that as well.”
As a finalist, Lafayette has been invited to participate in an oral presentation, which will be held in Pilsen, Czech Republic from October 8-12, 2009, however, officials do not plan to attend because of the cost associated with the trip.
More information on the awards is available at: http://www.livcomawards.com/2009-awards/whole-city-awards.htm. Winners will be announced in late 2009.
